The Hungarian Europe Society organised a workshop entitled “First Time Hungarian EU Presidency, First Time in a Trio” on 29-30 October 2010 at the Central European University in Budapest.
The invited lecturers were Federigo Argentieri (Guarini Institute for Public Affairs, John Cabot University, Rome), Péter Balázs (Center for EU Enlargement Studies, Central European University), Anton Bebler (University of Ljubljana), Carme Colomina (CIDOB - Barcelona Centre for International Affairs), Gábor Iván (Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs), Agnieszka £ada (Institute of Public Affairs, Warsaw), Piotr Maciej Kaczyñski (Centre for European Policy Studies, Brussels), Martina Klicperova-Baker (Institute of Psychology, Academy of Sciences, Prague), Uwe Puetter (Central European University, Budapest), György Urkuti (Hungarian  Ministry for Foreign Affairs), Steven Van Hecke (University of Antwerp), and Jari Vilén (Embassy of Finland to Hungary).

Hungary, as a relatively new member state of the European Union, has received extraordinary political tasks and unique chances from January 2010 onward: the country has been working in a “Trio Presidency” with Spain and Belgium in a tight cooperation based on a common programme. And first time in its history, Hungary will give the Presidency of the European Union in the first six months of 2011. Moreover, the Lisbon Treaty has just entered into force in the middle of a global economic crisis, creating particular challenges for all politicians, government officials, experts, and representatives of the civil society in Hungary.
